Short Biography

Dr. Paul Smith
Arup, U.K.

Dr. Smith started his career as a mechanical engineering apprentice at the age of 16 aiming to become a mechanical “Toolmaker”. He then went on to gain a Masters and Doctorate at Cranfield Institute of Technology, U.K. Dr. Paul has more than 35 years of experience in safety-critical and nuclear engineering, as well as more general science and technology. From 1984 to 1987, he worked for ESKOM in South Africa related to the nuclear power plant at Keoberg near Cape Town. Returning to the U.K., he joined the Sizewell nuclear power development programme. From 1996 to 2006, he occupied senior roles at the Devonport Royal Dockyard in support of the British Royal Navy. After several years in the independent consulting sector, Dr. Smith joined in 2012 the Arup consulting organisation, where he leads Arup’s Integrity, Reliability and Safety Analysis (IRSA). He is engaged in developing new and innovative techniques for complex system’s analysis under extreme loading conditions that can cause disasters and severe accidents. Over the past 2 years, Dr. Paul has been instrumental at Arup in leading and developing new techniques for providing resilience engineering, while achieving resilience to severe accidents and understanding the needs for disaster risk reduction.
